Avalanche is a layer-1 blockchain that serves as a platform for decentralized applications (dApps) and custom, layer-2 blockchain networks. Avalanche’s transaction output of up to 6,500 transactions per second is considered fast compared to several other popular blockchains, including Ethereum and Polkadot. The Avalanche mainnet launched in 2020.
As the native token of the Avalanche blockchain network, AVAX can be used to secure the blockchain and pay transaction processing fees on the network. It also functions as a unit of account across the custom blockchains in the Avalanche network. The total supply of AVAX is 720 million.
