How Crypto Donations Help to Close the Gender Gap

How Crypto Donations to Tech and Science Nonprofits Are Helping to Close the Gender Gap

by

Hundreds of millions of dollars of cryptocurrency has been donated to thousands of nonprofits as Crypto Philanthropy continues to be a force for good. Organizations that have technology and science-focused missions in particular, however, have often caught the attention of the crypto community.

After all, crypto relies on blockchain technology and is regarded by some as a fundamental technological breakthrough. It has ushered in a new phase of the internet, web3, that is likely to have a significant impact on the way we work, live, and interact with each other.

Satoshi Nakomoto’s whitepaper on Bitcoin and the growing impact of Crypto Philanthropy have changed thousands of lives around the world. Now, crypto users are giving back to help educate and inspire the next generation of innovators who just might discover the next big breakthrough.

Gifts of cryptocurrency are critical in their impact on institutions with technology and science related missions because they support programs that inspire future STEM innovators to work in technology-based industries. Today’s children are tomorrow’s workforce and a gift of cryptocurrency may lead to the next great technological breakthrough that innovates the world around us.

Organizations Working to Close the Gender Gap in Technology

The UNESCO Science Report 2021 found that women are still a significant minority in scientific fields such as digital information technology, mathematics, physics, engineering, and computing.  Women in science and tech are less likely to have access to funding, and women make up only 28% of graduates in engineering.

Many nonprofits have made it their central mission to close the gender gap that currently exists in the tech industry. One organization that has found plenty of support from the crypto community is Girls Who Code, which aims to change the image of what a programmer looks like and does, and is building a pipeline of future female engineers.

Permissionless, an event that took place earlier this year and was sponsored by Blockworks, dedicated a percentage of ticket sales to Girls Who Code, resulting in a $600,000 donation

Individual donors have also resonated with the organization’s mission; NFT creator Rich Poole chose to donate Tezos (XTZ) from the royalties of his NFT project “fx(mash)” to Girls Who Code. “There’s much more work needed to make this space more inclusive,” Poole said of his decision.

Support the Next Technological Breakthrough by Donating to Tech and Science Nonprofits

Many crypto donors have supported nonprofits in the tech and science industries, but there’s still a lot of work to be done to ensure everyone has equal access and opportunities to pursue careers in the sector. From educational programs to mentorship, nonprofits are doing all they can to close the gender gap in tech and make sure that the next technological breakthrough is equitable.

Dreams for Schools, another nonprofit that aims to make STEAM more approachable and accessible to all, had this to say about how they use crypto donations to support girls in STEAM career paths:

Dreams for Schools has been able to use the donations and support received from the Crypto community to host quarterly Girls in STEAM night events virtually. We created Girls in STEAM Night because we know that even today, girls are systematically redirected from pursuing higher education and careers in STEAM. The Girls in STEAM night events feature 1-2 female speakers who share their pathways into STEAM careers along with workshops around game development, engineering or web development for the girls to engage and explore their interests!
