Mission Statement
Women for Afghan Women (WAW) is a grassroots civil society organization dedicated to protecting and promoting the rights of disenfranchised Afghan women and girls in Afghanistan and New York. In particular, WAW works to help Afghan women and girls exercise their rights to pursue their individual potential, to self-determination, and to representation in all areas of life.
WAW relentlessly advocates for women’s rights and challenges the norms that underpin gender-based violence to influence attitudes and bring about change.
Why Donate to Women for Afghan Women?
Right now, existence is resistance for WAW—as it is for every woman and girl in Afghanistan. But, we refuse to be silenced or to cower.
We are working to adjust and adapt to the new reality on the ground. We are negotiating with the new administration in Afghanistan to allow us to continue our work. Although our women’s shelters are closed, we are still caring for many children in our Children’s Support Centers and continuing our work with internally displaced persons and refugees. We are determined to employ every resource we have to continue our critical humanitarian work in Afghanistan.
In the US, WAW has been working with immigrant communities to provide culturally sensitive services, including case management, legal services and support, empowerment classes, and youth and seniors programs, among others. Today, this network of comprehensive programs and services has expanded to attend to the needs of new refugees arriving from Afghanistan. As Afghan refugees arrive in the US, WAW is working day and night to coordinate with refugee resettlement agencies in Virginia and New York to welcome Afghans able to evacuate from Afghanistan, with warmth and love.
WAW is the only Afghan-led organization in the US that provides support to Afghan survivors of domestic violence, and the only Afghan-led direct service organization in the East Coast that provides culturally sensitive social services in the Afghan languages of Dari and Pashto. As such, WAW addresses cases across the US, from Virginia, to Texas, Connecticut, California, among others. In addition, our team in the US serves diverse immigrant groups because of proficiencies in six languages: Dari/Farsi, Pashto, Urdu, HIndi, Spanish, and English.
Prior to the takeover, WAW was the largest women’s rights organization in Afghanistan, with 32 centers, a vast network of services and programs, and a women’s rights training program that altogether reached every province in the country—and all led by local Afghans (majority of them women).
