The Need for Patient and Family Support:

Illness, disability, and injury can turn a family’s world upside down, disrupting their ability to live a normal life and earn a living. The added stress of financial worries—like paying for medical care and daily expenses—can make recovery more difficult.

Families often face a heavy burden as they adjust to a serious medical situation, juggling appointments, and navigating complex insurance plans. At the same time, the need for patient support services is growing. Standard insurance and other programs often don’t cover all the rising costs of long-term treatment. These out-of-pocket expenses can include everything from medical bills and specialized equipment to transportation, lodging, and meals. Many families find it difficult to cover these new costs while also keeping up with essential household bills like rent and groceries, especially when work hours and income are drastically reduced.

This is where the HSF steps in. We provide direct financial and emotional support to help eligible patients and families with care-related expenses. We act as a bridge, connecting them with immediate relief and helping them work toward longer-term stability.

Our Key Initiatives:

Patient and Family Care: HSF directly helps patients and families by covering medical expenses, purchasing specialized recovery equipment, and paying for other care-related costs not covered by insurance, such as transportation, lodging, and food.

Hospital Partnerships: We have strong partnerships with patient service programs at leading hospitals, including Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Mass General Cancer Center, and Home Base. Through these collaborations, we work directly with social work and care teams to provide verified medical support to patients.

Healthcare Scholarships: To create lasting change and assist in the training of future healthcare professionals, HSF has established scholarship programs with Northeastern University Bouvé College of Nursing and the University of New Hampshire College of Health and Human Services. These scholarships support first-generation college students with financial needs who are pursuing careers in healthcare.
