14 Nonprofits to Support During Autism Acceptance Month

by | Apr 11, 2022

Every year in April, Autism Acceptance Month celebrates the autism community and honors the contribution of people on the autism spectrum all around the world. Beyond raising awareness, this month also aims to create a world where everyone in the autism community has the support and understanding they need.

Autism Acceptance Month used to be known as Autism Awareness Month, but the Autism Society of America renamed the month in 2021. The reason behind the change is to encourage more inclusive and welcoming communities rather than just focusing on increasing awareness that people have autism. Autism Acceptance Month encourages everyone to actively include people with autism in their communities and daily activities.

The shift is an important step toward igniting further change and ensuring global acceptance of people on the autism spectrum. The need for understanding, including, and empowering people with autism is greater than ever; according to the CDC, about 1 in every 44 children in the U.S. have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Autism Acceptance Month 2022: How to Get Involved

To support Autism Acceptance Month this year, there are several things you can do:

Find national and local events that celebrate the autism community.

Many events are still being held virtually and can be attended no matter where you are located.

Gather resources on autism acceptance and inclusivity.

You can find information from organizations such as the CDC and the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC). The Autism Society also has a wide variety of resources on different autism-related subjects, including how to build social connections and health and wellness support.

Help educate children on autism.

It’s important to educate the next generation on kindness and acceptance toward people who have autism, especially since so many children today are being diagnosed with ASD. If you have children, read books about autism with them, or support any Autism Acceptance themes your local libraries or schools may be sponsoring.

Donate to nonprofits that support the autism community and are worldwide leaders in autism research and acceptance.

There are a variety of nonprofits who are mission-focused on autism. Your donation will help fund the latest research, support parents of children with autism, sponsor inclusive environments, and more.
