The Southern California wildfires, which ignited on January 7, 2025, raged across the Los Angeles metropolitan area and surrounding regions. The fires were driven by a combination of dangerous conditions, including hurricane-force winds, extremely low humidity, and prolonged drought. These conditions created an environment ripe for rapid-fire spread.

Multiple residents lost their lives, and tens of thousands were forced to evacuate their homes. There was significant structural damage to homes and businesses and the heavy traffic caused by mass evacuations created significant challenges for emergency responders, with abandoned vehicles obstructing roadways and hindering access to affected areas.

Crypto Philanthropy Support

The Giving Block set up an emergency response fundraiser to support charitable organizations working in the Greater Los Angeles Metro Area to assist with humanitarian and disaster relief efforts. Donations to the charities on the ground provided emergency medical care, food, shelter, and other forms of aid to those impacted.

How were donation to the participating charities matched?

Donations through The Giving Block of any supported type (e.g. crypto, stock, DAF grant, or card) to charitable organizations in good standing participating in the Los Angeles fire response as shown on The Giving Block Los Angeles Fire Response campaign webpage (“participating charities”) were matched 1:1 until the $1,000,000 (one million dollar) match was exhausted or until January 31, 2025.

Was there a limit on the match dollars for each participating charity?

Yes. Shift4 CEO Jared Issacman matched donations up to $100,000 for an individual participating charity to ensure that the largest number of organizations on the ground in Los Angeles were able to benefit from the match.

Over what period of time were donations matched?
