Christians Against Poverty New Zealand

Mission Statement

Christians Against Poverty’s mission is to help end money chaos in New Zealand. CAP works in partnership with local churches — walking alongside households in need — providing free wrap-around Debt Help for New Zealanders in unmanageable debt and hardship.

Why Donate to Christians Against Poverty New Zealand?

CAP takes a ‘with Jesus’ approach that cares for the whole person. Every year, CAP meets face-to-face with nearly 1,000 New Zealand households who are trapped in a cycle of debt and poverty.

Before CAP's help:
— 3 out of 5 households were isolated from loved ones because of the pressure of unmanageable debt
— Nearly 1 in 2 skipped meals
— 4 out of 5 people said debt affected their mental health, and;
— 4 out of 5 parents said it was difficult to provide for their kids (Source: CAP client survey).

CAP's team, together with the local church, provides wrap-around support throughout people's 2-to-4-year journey out of debt.

💚Each journey enables families to build financial resilience and find hope. And doors open for people to start strengthening their relationships — with money, themselves, others and God.

Here’s what your donation will provide:
1. A caring CAP first responder when a person calls for help.
2. An emergency food parcel, or other practical assistance as needed.
3. A CAP Debt Coach from a local church who visits the person’s home.
3. A budget prioritizing essentials like food, rent and power.
4. Long-term CAP support – expertise & advocacy as people work towards freedom from unmanageable debt.
5. A hands-on journey of people learning to budget and save, which helps build life-changing financial habits!
6. An introduction to a loving church family, to walk alongside each person and provide practical frontline support as needed.

CAP never pays a dollar of clients’ debt – it’s clients who do the hard work of keeping to a budget & making repayments.

👩‍👦 Here's what Debt Free CAP client, Sarah, says: “My cheeks are hurting from smiling so much! Now as a mum: driving to the beach, not having to worry about getting gasoline… I get to create a loving home. I think that’s what any mum or dad wants. Especially bringing the Lord into my life as well. I can’t stop smiling.”
