Why Donate to Maui Humane Society?
Aloha! Maui Humane Society is the only animal shelter on the island of Maui, Hawaii. We have an open door policy and accept all animals in need, regardless of medical emergency/condition or age, and care for over 4000 homeless pets a year. We are a small shelter on a little island with big passion and determination to give every animal the second chance it deserves! Despite that we’re on island time, we feel light years ahead of ourselves in being able to accept crypto! We’re delighted that you would consider donating to our shelter and invite you to get in touch with us for a tour if you are ever visiting!
Beyond caring and finding homes for our animals, we also have some amazing programs that were developed to address our island’s animal overpopulation and geographical restrictions. We’ve also started to assist local pet parents in need by creating a pet food bank during COVID. So far, we’ve distributed 90,000 lbs of free food throughout the island to those facing financial hardship and to the residents of Molokai and Lanai.
Here are some of the ways your donation will save lives and contribute to us sustaining lifesaving initiatives that impact thousands of animals ever year:
– Wings of Aloha
A transfer program sends animals on flights to adoption-guaranteed homes on the Mainland. This program helps us continue to accept pets even when our kennels are full and creates space in the shelter for those who truly need long term housing as they recover from neglect/injury and/or receive behavior training to become an adoption candidate. Your donation will help cover costs of the flight, air kennel and transport arrangements.
– Spay it Forward
Our vet clinic spayed/neutered 8080 cats and dogs in FY21. This consisted of owned pets in the community, feral/community cats and our shelter population. We offer low cost spay/neuter services to encourage people to be responsible and help stop the island’s overpopulation. Your donation helps us keep the costs low for the public, only $10 for cats and $20 for dogs.
– Trap/Neuter Release
With an estimated 40,000 feral/community cats on Maui, we’ve initiated an TNR program to help control the population. We loan traps to the community who trap cats and bring them to us for free spay/neuter surgery. Once they’ve recovered, they are released back to their neighborhoods. Our Community Cat Coordinator provides support to the community and cat colony caretakers to solve nuisance issues using humane deterrents.
– Fostering
Last year 2543 pets were fostered by amazing families who stepped up to help when we needed them most. Our foster program is essential to saving lives when the shelter is full as well as placing special needs pets in homes when they would otherwise decline in a shelter environment. Our ‘kitten season’ results in thousands of tiny kittens being brought to us in a condensed timeframe and we rely on our Bottle Baby Fosters to feed them every 3 hours. Your donation helps us provide supplies for the program such as kitten formula, bottles and bedding.
– Hope Fund
This 100% donor funded program provides advanced medical surgeries and procedures to sick and injured animals with needs beyond what is typically possible in a shelter surgery. From amputations to cancer treatment, our vet staff performed 2559 procedures on 963 animals who benefited from a clean bill of health before being adopted.
– Animals & Staff
Our animals are amazing survivors. Every single one has a special story that compels our staff to fall in love and treat them like they were their own. We champion for them, we fight for them and we care deeply about their future. Every week we hold a 360 meeting to review a list of animals who have been in our care for too long or are experiencing behavioral/medical issues. Each department is represented at this meeting to provide feedback and results on each animal similar to a case management approach. From medical to marketing, we develop a collaborative plan to ensure that each animal’s needs are met in order to get them adopted into the best home as quickly as possible.
Mahalo for considering donating to help Maui’s homeless animals! We thank you in advance for the thousands of animals you will impact. Aloha!Â
