10 Days of Cryptocurrency Donations – #4: Henrietta Fore and UNICEF’s Cryptocurrency Donations Fund

UNICEF Accepts Bitcoin Donations, and They’re HODLing.

In October 2019, Henrietta Fore and UNICEF announced that the organization will now hold cryptocurrency donations, rather than selling the Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies they receive as contributions. The vision is to eventually distribute them to open source tech projects in the form of cryptocurrency grants. The first contribution to the UNICEF Cryptocurrency Fund was made by the Ethereum Foundation, the group behind Ether, the second largest cryptocurrency in the world by market cap.

“This is a new and exciting venture for UNICEF,” said Henrietta Fore, UNICEF Executive Director. “If digital economies and currencies have the potential to shape the lives of coming generations, it is important that we explore the opportunities they offer. That’s why the creation of our Cryptocurrency Fund is a significant and welcome step forward in humanitarian and development work.”

UNICEF’s Crypto Fund has a goal of raising $25 million worth of cryptocurrencies, primarily in Bitcoin and Ether.
